These are the words of NVIDIA's very own CEO, Jensen Huang, as he stood before a packed audience of over 6,000 at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2025. His words highlighted not just an opportunity, but a critical challenge facing the autonomous driving industry.
We got chills — it sounds like something out of a box office hit.
But Huang isn't just painting a sci-fi fantasy. He's describing an inevitable future where autonomous vehicles reshape how we move, live, and interact with transportation. The implications are massive: safer roads, more efficient travel, and an entirely new economy built around autonomous systems.
There's just one catch. To make autonomous vehicles safe and reliable enough for this vision, they need to be tested across an almost impossible number of real-world scenarios. Industry experts estimate it would take 215 billion miles of testing to achieve true autonomous capability. The traditional (AKA, expensive and exhausting) approach is to build specially equipped test vehicles, each costing upwards of $1 million, and hope to even encounter enough diverse scenarios to build reliable systems.
