DePIN Hub’s April Travel Report ✈️
Just weeks after our eventful trip to Denver, Colorado, the DePIN Hub Team was back above the clouds, jetsetting between continents to report back to you, dear reader. DePIN is a global phenomenon and we want to capture the vibes and get a feel for what’s being built, no matter if it’s in America, Asia or the Middle East. 🌎🌏🌍
2 big crypto events went down this month in Hong Kong and Dubai, which gave us the chance to meet up with some familiar faces and get to know plenty of new people too. As always, it was an awesome adventure, and proof that DePIN is everywhere and ready to take the world by storm! 🌪️
Hong Kong 🐉
2024 is the year of the DePIN Dragon. 🐲
The DePIN Hub team flew into Hong Kong for the Web3 Festival which took place from April 6 - 9. With plenty of side events going on, there was a lot of DePIN networking to do. And just like we saw during ETH Denver, DePIN was a hot narrative.🔥
The DePIN Hub team was in town to support Hotspotty CTO Daniel Andrade as he moderated “Decoding DePIN Hardware”, a main stage panel discussion with industry peers from Streamr Network, Kwil, IoTeX and GMNetwork.
Running parallel to the main event were plenty of other DePIN related events and activities, including an IoTeX sponsored R3al World meetup, giving Daniel another opportunity to hop on the mic.

As Hong Kong continues to battle Singapore for Asia’s finance hub crown, crypto and Web3 have become unmissable topics of discussion. During our visit, there was a conference with the government of Hong Kong. The highest members of government showed their support and even discussed DePIN for an entire minute during their speech on the potential of Web3! Quite an achievement given the prior regulatory scrutiny in the region.
DePIN is easier for leadership in government and traditional industry to grasp and support due to the fact that its services align to initiatives already underway for many years, such as IoT, smart cities and digital transformation. Alongside Hong Kong’s approval of Bitcoin and Ether ETFs, this official recognition of DePIN is surely a sign of things to come.
Shenzhen ⚙️
Being in Hong Kong gave us a chance to take a closer look at the hardware builders that are ever so important to all those DePIN projects based around the globe. 🔍
So before we charged up for our flight to Dubai, we hopped on a train to Shenzhen, China’s Silicon Valley, to meet up with our friends from RAKwireless and Seeed Studio. DePIN may be a global phenomenon but a lot of the critical components making up this hardware comes directly from China. While mining crypto may be illegal there, it’s clear that they plan to solidify their position as the manufacturing floor for DePIN. With investor money flowing in, the interest in hardware-based DePINs is very much alive.

Dubai 🌧️
Now this wasn’t on our bingo card! 👀
After our cold and snowy trip to Denver, we were looking forward to some sun, sea and sand in warm Dubai. What we didn’t expect was to be totally flooded in the City of Gold. We couldn’t even make it back to the hotel after the first day’s events!
With all the crypto OGs in town, Dubai turned into a real liquidity pool. 💧
We were in Dubai of course for Token 2049, one of crypto’s biggest global conferences. Alongside the main event which ran from April 18-19, there were a lot of DePIN-related activities to discover.
We started off our trip by attending Aethir’s DePIN Day. This was an important event for Aethir as they launched the new Aethir Edge product. Daniel was invited on stage to discuss “The Impact of DePIN on GPU Performance and Efficiency”.
IoTeX also took the opportunity to host another R3al World side event, with Daniel being invited once again on to a panel to talk about DePIN.
Perhaps most notably though, was the buzz surrounding Peaq during Token 2049. With their mainnet launch expected very soon, and several ecosystem partners collaborating on site, Peaq’s Token 2049 booth was hot. Visitors were treated to a taste of the future thanks to XMAQUINA’s tokenized autonomous Robo Café. 🤖
Similar to what we witnessed in Hong Kong, it was clear to us that Dubai has positioned itself as the Web3 leader in the Middle East. While the regulatory environment in major economies like the US and China worsens, Dubai has welcomed crypto with deep pockets and friendly tax policies. 🤝
Wrapping Up
Travelling non-stop is exhausting, but meeting all the diehard DePIN builders is what fuels us and motivates us to do what we do. We spoke to a LOT of people during our trip and one thing was clear to us: It’s no longer a question of “What is DePIN?” but “Of course I’ve heard of DePIN. Are you guys jumping on this because it’s hot?😅”
There are many new DePINs coming to the surface, so now, more than ever, it’s time to level up your DePIN game. With education, interviews, project support and plenty more, DePIN Hub is the place to be. After all the conferences, panels and parties, DePIN Hub finally caught the event bug and decided to start throwing its own DePIN Drinks meetup!
This was an awesome first of its kind DePIN event taking place at The Block in Lisbon and was supported by Streamr, POKT Network, with food and drinks sponsored by Peaq. It was a massive success with over a hundred attendees passing by for pizza, drinks and presentations.
Hotspotty’s Michael Sothan gave a talk about the history of Hostspotty and outlined the vision for DePIN Hub, while our friends from Streamr helped out by live streaming the event over their decentralized data broadcasting network! 🌐
